Introduction to Clay

From building blocks to roof and floor tiles, nothing exudes rustic charm as well as clay. Used in construction for over 6,000 years, the local demand for clay has grown phenomenally over the past 60 years. Today, the use of clay both in structure and decor are commonplace. It is at the same time both durable and delicate; elegant and affordable. Clay is the ideal building material. Clay building products may be used for a variety of applications. Clay floor tiles are a popular favourite. Available in a wide variety of shaes and sizes, this product lends itself to a number of design and style options.

From driveways to patios, living rooms to bathrooms, clay tiles are a natural choice. Homes constructed of clay are on average a few degrees Centigrade cooler than those made of concrete, a fact that is further amplified when a clay roof is erected as well. The result is a comfortable living environment with little or no assistance from your air conditioning unit or fan.

Benefits of Clay

  1. Weight per square foot of hollow clay blocks is less than any other masonry product and is, in fact, 60% to 70% lighter than a concrete product and easier to cut.
  2. Lighter weight results in:
    • Lower truck loading/transportation/uploading costs.
    • Lower costs for laying of blocks, as they are lighter and can be laid faster.
    • Creates less load on the foundation than any other type of solid material. This is particularly advantageous in multi-stoey buildings.
  3. Strength, durability and wear
  4. Moisture resistance
  5. Thermal insulation
  6. Chemical resistance
  7. Fire resistance
